About Shameless Pets
Shameless Pets is a sustainable pet treat brand that transforms surplus and imperfect ingredients from farms and food processors into nutritious dog and cat treats. Co-founded in 2018 by James Bello & Alex Waite, the brand has grown from independent pet retailers to over 8,000 locations at national retailers like Petco and Whole Foods alongside ecommerce marketplaces like Amazon and Chewy. Over this time, Shameless Pets has saved over 5 million pounds of food from going to waste while making healthy, delicious treats that pets love.
Challenge
Outgrowing an in-house accountant while raising capital as a CPG brand expanding to national scale
Within three years of launching in 2018, Shameless Pets had reached 7-figure revenue and expanded from independent pet shops to Amazon, Chewy, and big-box retail accounts. Founder and CEO James Bello was running the books himself on nights and weekends to keep pace, time that could otherwise have gone toward sales and marketing. James eventually brought in an in-house accountant, who took day-to-day bookkeeping off his plate.
However, as the business scaled into national distribution, the complexity outgrew what even a full-time resource without consumer packaged goods expertise could support. Selling through distributors introduced a steady stream of black box chargebacks and deductions. Without a process to validate each one against the underlying invoice, the accounts receivable subledger didn’t reliably reflect what was actually expected to come in, making accurate cash forecasting a challenge for Shameless Pets.
Expenses were also consolidated into a single blended P&L, so retailer-specific costs, like slotting fees, trade promotions, and Amazon discounts, weren’t tied to the accounts actually driving them. Shameless Pets didn’t have a retailer- or channel-level view to know with confidence which accounts were the most profitable or how to allocate resources accordingly.
As a venture-backed brand actively raising capital and reporting to investors, that gap mattered even more, since clean, well-supported financials are what board and investor conversations run on. The catalyst for change came when James caught inconsistencies in his accountant’s reporting and suspected more was likely happening beneath the surface. That instinct sent him looking for a more specialized partner, which led to The Accountrepreneur on a referral from one of his investors.
James was evaluating multiple providers, and most offered the function without the CPG fluency or the true integration he wanted, a partner that felt like part of the team rather than a fractional resource. The Accountrepreneur’s team understood the pressures of a scaling CPG brand well enough to speak to his pain points before he had to explain them, and that fluency gave James the confidence to move forward.
“Working through distributors turned into a black box of chargebacks and AR issues, and that’s when I knew I needed to get more granular with our P&L and be a lot more strategic about accounting instead of just reactive.”
Solution
Granular, investor-grade financials with The Accountrepreneur’s CPG expertise and full-stack accounting solution
For Shameless Pets, onboarding with The Accountrepreneur was fast and low-friction. James handed over access to the general ledger, and The Accountrepreneur became the brand’s embedded finance partner, taking full ownership of accounts payable, accounts receivable, bookkeeping, month-end close, and financial reporting. Within roughly two weeks, The Accountrepreneur was already surfacing issues and recommending changes, with none of the drawn-out handoff James expected from bringing on a new function.
That speed set the tone for the relationship, and The Accountrepreneur established trust early enough that conversations quickly moved past month-end reporting and into strategy. The Accountrepreneur instituted standardized CPG accounting workflows to accrue trade spend, including scanbacks and EDLP allowances, and reconcile deductions and promotional allowances at the account level, closing the gap that had made retailer-specific costs invisible inside the topline.
That discipline let The Accountrepreneur replace Shameless Pets’ single blended P&L with retailer- and channel-level reporting, so James could finally understand how promotion and trade spend affected each major account’s contribution margin. That visibility has had a meaningful impact on gross margins, which have expanded by roughly 11 points since The Accountrepreneur came on board. That same discipline extended to accounts receivable.
The Accountrepreneur tracks the promotional calendar, validates every distributor deduction against the applicable invoice, and stays on top of collections across Shameless Pets’ full range of retail accounts, from small independent shops to sophisticated national buyers. Even as receivables have nearly tripled alongside the brand’s national expansion while working with The Accountrepreneur, write-offs have remained negligible, evidence that the AR book has stayed collectible rather than aging as the business scaled.
With clean, granular data in place, The Accountrepreneur and James shifted their conversations from monthly close to forward-looking strategy, modeling profitability by customer and channel and mapping the levers that would get Shameless Pets there. James had never looked at individual channel P&Ls before, and seeing them separately showed him that not every channel was contributing equally, prompting him to redirect inventory and marketing investment toward the ones that were actually driving profitable growth.
The same rigor now underpins conversations with Shameless Pets’ investors and board, who see a strategy backed by real numbers rather than a plan retold after the fact. The relationship also gave James back his time. Where accounting once meant nights and weekends, he now spends roughly an hour a week with The Accountrepreneur team and trusts them to execute everything else, freeing him to focus on sales and marketing initiatives that have kept Shameless Pets growing 50 to 100% year over year.
Working with The Accountrepreneur gave James and his team confidence in numbers detailed enough to trust completely, empowering the brand to drive rapid growth or shift to disciplined profitability as the market demanded either one.
“Working through our channel mix with The Accountrepreneur let us recalibrate where we wanted to grow, and be thoughtful about prioritizing the channels that also improved our margins and profitability.”
